Tech Companies Impacted By H-1B Proposed Changes During Trump Administration - Workology

Tech Companies Impacted By H-1B Proposed Changes During Trump Administration - Workology In 2017, there will be 85,000 H1-B visas approved with 20,000 of those reserved for Masters degree holders. Silicon Valley is still eagerly awaiting proposed changes as part of Trumps likely executive order which warrants more research of visas and immigration especially the H1-B. But the question begs, which companies are likely to be more at risk if H1-B visa requirements and processes are changed? Ive talked in depth about the process of ballot stuffing where large companies submit H1-B visa applications for thousands of candidates knowing that there are only a certain number of approvals over the course of the year. However, its hard to understand just how common ballot stuffing actually is when it comes to the H1-B visa lottery process. Applications that meet all the criteria are then placed into a lottery where 85,000 visas are essentially drawn at random. The best way to ensure that your company has the most visas selected as part of the lottery is to have more visa applications than the rest. The practice seems crazy and yet over 260,000 applications were submitted in 2016.  Large organizations are spending between $1.7 to 6 million a year to employ their best STEM talent with visas.  Question is what does $1.7 million dollars in visa applications look like? According to a recent story by Reuters large employers are submitting between 3,256 to 95,800 applications. The Top Ten Tech Companies Submitting H1-B Visa Applications in 2016 #1 Cognizant Cognizant is an American multinational corporation that provides digital, technology, consulting, and operations services. How to Choose the Right LinkedIn Photo

How to Choose the Right LinkedIn Photo So you’ve added a solid Summary, Headline, and Experience to your LinkedIn Profile.  What’s next? A great headshot that exudes leadership qualities, conveys confidence, and makes employers eager to meet you. If you’re unsure how to select a photo for your LinkedIn Profile, you have plenty of company. Many job seekers pull in a hastily cropped family photograph or select a picture with a vacation scene, rather than taking the time to use the right LinkedIn headshot. However, just like your best interview suit or a powerfully written Profile, a positive, personality-infused LinkedIn photo can make a great first impression.  These tips will help you avoid a LinkedIn photo disaster (especially the kind that turns off potential employers): 1 â€" Choose the right setting for your LinkedIn headshot. While a relaxed, outdoor scene behind you is perfect if your career is in golf facility management or landscaping, it can look out of place for a professional whose workday is filled with Board meetings or sales calls. Do you spend your day in a particular type of environment, such as a laboratory, oil field, or data center room? A shot that shows your industry background can draw attention to your area of specialty. The same is true if your career is in a creative field, where either a powerful color can reinforce your creative message. If you’re aspiring to the corner office, there’s no point in posting a LinkedIn photo of yourself in a bar or casual setting. Most conservative professions, such as Chief Operating Officer, Accountant, or Financial Analyst, attract hiring managers who are somewhat conservative themselves. Therefore, you can’t go wrong with a neutral background that conveys the seriousness required in your field. 2 Dress for the job you want. You’ve probably heard this phrase before, and for good reason. Hiring authorities, just like your colleagues and friends, are more likely to be receptive to those who share the same attitude and approach to work. In addition to looking at ease in your desired job, dressing for success tells others that you’re serious about your professional brand. Therefore, you’ll benefit from mimicking the same type of attire as your bosses and supervisors, starting with the image presented in your LinkedIn photo. As an added bonus, you can adopt the same personal style at work to continually reinforce your message of value. 3 Look around to get some ideas for your LinkedIn photo. There’s never been a better way to check out your competition! Surf LinkedIn to see what successful people in your field are wearing â€" and how they appear to have branded themselves by their headshot pictures. To find these competitors, type your target job title into the search bar at the top of your LinkedIn home page and then click on the list of people who hold this position. You might notice a common theme among the photos in your industry, such as a plain background, close-up headshot, or conservative suit-and-tie look. Take a few minutes to look at each Profile to examine the industry or company in which they’re employed, as well as any related information about each candidate, such as education or job history. Then, use these findings as a model for your own LinkedIn photo. 4 Smile! If you’re wearing a negative expression in your LinkedIn photo, you can be sure others will take note â€" and possibly refuse to do business with you. In particular, the air of surprise or anger that often accompanies a selfie can damage your personal brand message and put off employers. While a outsize grin isn’t a LinkedIn necessity, a welcoming smile or pleasant expression can work wonders on your online audience. As with other personal brand elements, you’ll want to select a photo that expresses your unique personality and encourages others to reach out to you. 5 Get a variety of photos from which to choose for your LinkedIn presence. No matter if you hire a professional photographer or ask a friend to take some shots in against the backdrop of your choice, you’ll be better equipped to make a strategic decision on your LinkedIn photo with an array of pictures at your disposal. This is a much better option than hunting through your phone for a suitable headshot. In addition, consider that having more than one great photo available for your Profile will give you with valuable alternatives. If you see a downward trend in the volume of LinkedIn connections, inquiry replies, or message responses you receive on LinkedIn, you can easily switch to another photo to gauge the difference. A well-thought-out LinkedIn headshot is an important element of your personal and professional brand. Make sure your online photo reflects your strength as a candidate and puts your best foot forward in the job search.

What to do (and not do) when youre unemployed

What to do (and not do) when you're jobless What to do (and not do) when you're jobless It's probably the most unnerving situation to be in. The thing you expectation will never occur. Be that as it may, joblessness is genuine and a considerable lot of us wind up amidst it eventually in our lives. Despite to what extent you're jobless, it can unleash ruin on your genuine feelings of serenity and your accounts. There are, be that as it may, a few stages you can take to attempt to confine that negative effect. A considerable lot of these means will likewise secure your credit in the long run.File for unemploymentI composed a week ago about when and how to document for unemployment benefits. This is an incredible security net offered by our administrative and state governments. In case you're qualified, ensure you document so you can have some cash coming in while you scan for a new position. There's no disgrace in exploiting the projects that were made to secure us when we're vulnerable.Alert your understudy credit providerIf you're having a monetary hardship, you can def er your understudy advances. In case you're jobless, that certainly considers a hardship, and your understudy credit servicer gets that. They would prefer you concede your advances now and remain current on installments later. Along these lines, contact your supplier and mention to them what is going on.Putting your credits into postponement will shield you from late charges and punishments. It will likewise shield you from having missed installments put on your credit report. These sorts of imprints can contrarily influence your financial assessment for a considerable length of time, which will affect your capacity to get future advances and credit.Apply for commercial center insuranceIf you've lost your employment, you've in all probability lost your medical coverage also. Since losing your employment is viewed as an actual existence occasion, you will be qualified to get protection through the marketplace once you're jobless. Not exclusively will this protect you if you have a we llbeing crisis while you're jobless (and permit you to get inclusion for your current needs), however it will likewise be substantially more moderate than different alternatives, similar to COBRA (see increasingly about that below).PS: You don't need to get laid off so as to apply for commercial center protection. In the event that you leave an occupation under any conditions, you're qualified. The sum you will pay every month will decide the amount you will win. Fun certainty: I have Kaiser Permanente protection through the commercial center now that I'm independently employed. It's excessively reasonable, so I don't stop for a second before heading off to the doctor.Search for new jobsIf you record for joblessness, you will be required to go after at any rate three positions every week, and show verification that you've done it. In addition to the fact that this ensures you're getting your advantage check, however it's a decent responsibility measure to ensure you are keeping stea dy over your activity search. If you don't have a clue where to begin, connect with the individuals in your systems! There are such a significant number of individuals out there who need to help you when you're battling. Connect with companions, previous associates, and colleagues who work in the field you're keen on. Possibly they can't truly find you a line of work, yet they may have exhortation or leads for you. Look at listservs like the WIN list to get started!Turn to your crisis savingsHopefully, you've had the option to develop some sort of emergency savings for circumstances such as this. What's more, on the off chance that you haven't yet are as yet utilized, begin organizing it now! It very well may be alarming and disappointing to need to utilize your crisis investment funds, however that is actually what you spared it for. Losing your employment is unquestionably a crisis, and you need that cash so as to keep a rooftop over your head, food in your stomach, and your bills current. So I am giving you consent to utilize your crisis reserve funds on your bills in this scenario.Ask for helpWhen my father was jobless for a half year when I was a child, he despite everything had bills to pay and three youngsters to deal with. To exacerbate the situation, he had recently taken out a 401k advance (you'll perceive how I feel about this beneath) for home enhancements. It turns out, when you stop or get laid off, you need to take care of your 401k advance rapidly or, in all likelihood you'll get burdened and punished as though you pulled back right on time for retirement. My father needed particularly to maintain a strategic distance from this punishment, so he inquired as to whether he could acquire cash to take care of it. Fortunately, my granddad had that cash and had the option to advance it to my father. He charged premium with the goal that he wouldn't lose cash himself, however it was a reasonable rate and was better than my father could have gotten from a bank advance. This assisted with forestalling a great deal of pressure and loss of cash, so I'm appreciative that my father went to my granddad for help when he required it.Of course, acquiring cash from friends and family can get truly entangled. It can mess up connections and make things clumsy. So on the off chance that you do obtain cash from a relative or companion, settle on sure to record your understanding recorded as a hard copy. Guide out a reimbursement plan with a cutoff time. That way, everybody will be in the same spot, and nobody will get baffled or angry. In the event that you wind up experiencing difficulty taking care of the cash on schedule, be straightforward! Have a discussion with your adored one so they realize what's going on.Don't get from your retirementThis is in this way, in this way, so significant. What's more, I will holler this from the housetops for an incredible remainder. Never obtain from your retirement! You will be a lot of more regrettable o ff later on the off chance that you do this. Like I referenced above, in the event that you obtain from your retirement account before the matured of 59.5, you'll be punished. You should make good on assessments and expenses for pulling back ahead of schedule. This implies you will lose a great deal of that cash you've constantly put something aside for your retirement years.Plus, regardless of whether you're ready to take care of that cash in the end, you'll have lost cash. In the event that you went to the July Money Circle gathering, you know that compound interest is your companion. This implies the more drawn out your cash is out of the market, the less it's ready to develop on itself. So you should attempt to keep your interests in the market regardless. Your 65-year-old self will express gratitude toward you.Don't just depend on COBRAAfter you lose or leave an employment, you normally get a letter via the post office about COBRA insurance. In the event that you don't have a c lue what COBRA is, it stands for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, which was a law passed that requires there to be a protection choice for the individuals who leave employment.COBRA is accessible whether you exited your position willfully or not. You don't need to be laid off so as to utilize it. COBRA is regularly accessible for you to use for around year and a half, in case you're jobless or underemployed for that long. It's an incredible advantage that was the main alternative for protection secured before the Affordable Care Act was passed. In case you're jobless, don't consequently accept that COBRA is your best or just choice. Contrast advantages and expenses with the protection designs in the healthcare commercial center. You may discover plans with more inclusion for a lower cost.Don't depend on your credit cardsOne of the keys for monetarily ensuring yourself is to not utilize your charge cards except if you have the cash to take care of them. Obvious ly, this can be inconceivable when you have bills to pay and mouths to take care of, with very little cash coming in. Yet, on the off chance that you have different alternatives than utilizing your charge cards, it's ideal. Else, you may get yourself somewhere down in the red even once you're utilized again. If you do need to go to your charge cards to get by, you do have alternatives to secure yourself. Call your banks and let them think about your circumstance. The thing is, they need to get paid, so on the off chance that you can't take care of your tabs, that harms them as well. Call them and inquire as to whether it's conceivable to bring down your financing costs while you're jobless, so your advantage charges don't inflatable and make it harder to make your payments. You ought to likewise see whether you have payment assurance insurance on your present Visas. This is an advantage that will suspend your loan fees and pay your base installment for a while. It can keep you from ha ving missed installments that will be accounted for on your credit report, which will hurt your FICO assessment. Obviously, there is a month to month expense that joins this security, and you can't get the protection once you're as of now jobless. So if this is something you have a feeling that you may require sometime in the not so distant future, investigate it now.Maggie Germano is a women's activist and money related mentor for ladies.
